Why competitors keep catching you off guard

This ChatGPT task turns AI into your competitor watchdog.

Difficulty: Easy | Impact: Strategic advantage | Read Time: 1 min

Before:
You're head down grinding while competitors make moves around you.

First you hear about their "game-changing" launch is from a prospect asking why you don't have that feature. Or worse, from their LinkedIn post with corporate spin.

You're constantly on the back foot, too swamped with quota pressure to do anything about it.

After:
You've got a personal intelligence analyst tracking every competitor move.

You know about their launches and strategic shifts before their own sellers do.

You're armed with intel that makes you sound like the most connected person in the room.

The Workflow:
Did you know ChatGPT has a scheduled tasks feature? It's a hidden gem used by this workflow. Using tasks is not obvious in ChatGPT, so you can find out more here.

Anyway, back to the workflow…

  1. List your 3-5 main competitors

  2. Schedule your analysis using this intelligence prompt in ChatGPT:

Create a task that monitors a list of named competitors and summarise anything noteworthy that has happened in the last [INSERT TIMEFRAME: day/week/month].

Search across a wide range of public sources, including:
- News articles and press releases
- Social media (especially LinkedIn, Reddit and Twitter/X)
- Company blogs and newsletters
- Product changelogs and launch announcements
- Job boards and hiring trends
- Funding and financial news
- Web traffic or SEO visibility updates

Format the output as a concise intelligence report, grouped by company. For each company, include only the most relevant and recent developments that might be of interest to a competitor, investor, or strategic operator.

Use this company list:
- [Competitor 1]
- [Competitor 2]
- [Competitor 3]
- [Add as needed]

Summarise in bullet points under headings like:
- Product & Launches
- Marketing & Positioning
- Hiring & Culture
- Funding & FinancialsPartnerships & Alliances
- Customer Wins & Contracts
- Risk & Litigation
- Other Signals

Be brief but insightful. If there's nothing new for a company, just write "No notable updates this [week/month]".

  1. Your competitor analysis report will be sent to you via email at the frequency you choose. Use the intel to update your positioning and objection handling

Why it works:
Information is power in sales. Your prospects expect you to know what's going on.

When you can comment on market updates, you become a strategic advisor.

And selfishly, you are prepared to highlight your strengths when prospects bring up competitor news.
