Before:

ChatGPT-4 was good. But it had limits.

Lost context mid-conversation. Made up facts you had to verify. Peppered all writing with em dashes ( — ).

Sure, you worked around the gaps.

But the gaps were there.

After:

OpenAI just launched ChatGPT-5, promising to fix everything.

On paper, it looks incredible.

Deep reasoning, perfect memory, human-like writing. AGI is here!!

In practice?

Reddit is lighting up with complaints. Users calling it "slower," "less collaborative," and having "overworked secretary energy".

We’ve been doing our homework and here's what sellers need to know…

The 5 Biggest Improvements (On Paper)

1. Deep Reasoning Mode

ChatGPT finally thinks before it speaks.

Prompting "think deeply" or turning on ‘Think Longer’ turns on reasoning mode.

When enabled, ChatGPT will consider the answer instead of blurting out the first thing it thinks is correct. Literally add "Think deeply" to your prompt to enable.

"I’m working on a $2.8m deal. Rank the top 5 ways we could lose and give me counter-plays. Think deeply"

2. Sharper Accuracy

No more hallucinations. ChatGPT-5's answers are 45% less likely to contain factual errors than GPT-4 (and 80% less than GPT-3.5). And the model admits when it doesn't know something.

"Summarize this prospect's top 3 priorities from their last earnings call."

3. Deeper Memory

It effectively remembers everything, forever. GPT-5 can keep hundreds of pages in mind at once, from RFPs to email threads, staying coherent no matter how complex the conversation.

"Create a series of LinkedIn posts using the attached marketing whitepapers" Note: We think Claude still does this better.

4. Email and Calendar Integration

Scheduling hell is over. If you’re a Google user, connect GPT-5 to Gmail and Google Calendar so it can suggest meeting times, draft invites, and flag unanswered emails using your real schedule.

"List unanswered prospect emails from the last 7 days and draft responses."

5. Human-Sounding Writing

Rejoice… AI slop is no more! GPT-5 produces copy that feels personal and authentic with no stiff phrasing or "AI voice," so output reads like you wrote it.

"Write a warm follow-up email in my conversational style about their product launch."

The Reality Check

Initial user feedback on what people are actually experiencing:

It's slower and more verbose. Sometimes, speed matters. As sales pros, we need quick responses during calls for example. GPT-5 takes longer to think, especially in reasoning mode. Many users noted it "faltered in both speed and precision" for standard tasks.

Less collaborative for brainstorming. I use ChatGPT to think through ideas. Maybe you do the same and rely on AI for creative strategy sessions. Reddit users report GPT-5's reasoning is "more linear and constrained," making it "less effective for brainstorming chaotic ideas."

"Overworked secretary" energy. Sales is hard. It requires maintaining enthusiasm through long cycles, even in the face of rejection. Whilst sometimes over the top, we loved ChatGPT-4o’s positive energy. Users describe GPT-5 as efficient but uninspiring, missing the conversational engagement of GPT-4.

Context switching problems. Sales workflows often involve juggling multiple prospects and campaigns. Users report GPT-5 "loses important contextual information" when switching between topics.

Access issues. Perhaps the single biggest frustration is from paid users. Plus subscribers hit message limits faster than before (as few as 80 messages) and report GPT-5 "appears and disappears unpredictably." There is a theme emerging of OpenAI trying to control cost here.

The Verdict

ChatGPT-5 represents a huge advancement for technical and complex use cases. It offers superior accuracy, research capabilities, amazing analysis of big data sets and much improved formal writing skills.

However, these may have mixed practical implications for sales teams. Because those functions are coming at the expense of the conversational engagement and creative collaboration that many sales professionals valued in GPT-4.

The 5 biggest improvements above are real.

But depending on your use cases, you may need to switch back to GPT-4 for brainstorming and strategy sessions.

If you do, here's how to get GPT-4o back:

  • Step 1: Open ChatGPT on the Web: Go to https://chat.openai.com and log in with your OpenAI account

  • Step 2: Toggle ‘Show Legacy Models’: Click on your name or profile icon (bottom left corner) → Go to Settings → General • Toggle "Show legacy models"

It's still early days for GPT-5. How are you finding it so far?

Is it...
